Synopsis

Katrina has arrived in New Orleans, and Tookie has decided to ride it out. A lizard the size of an alligator tells Tookie the levy will break soon. Tookie weathers the storm and the waters and collects his 80-year-old neighbor—Mrs. Mary—and heads to higher ground. Something is in the water, though. Something big. Something hateful…

Notes

The first thing I noted about this story was the clarity of the writing. The prose is silky smooth, and the dialogue is crisp and precise. The eye dialect, personally, drew me further into the setting of New Orleans, LA.

Quotes

“Man, people don’ need no monster to make ‘em do evilhearted shit. All it take is a brown face, or somebody wearin’ old tore–up clothes.”
